1. President Mahmoud Abbas undertook a State visit to India in October 2008. During the visit Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of India hosted a banquet dinner in his honour. During the visit President Abbas also met Shri M. Hamid Ansari, Vice President, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Shri L.K. Advani, the Leader of the Opposition and Shri E. Ahamed, Minister of State for External Affairs. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh announced a grant of $10 million as budgetary support to the Palestine National Authority as well as an additional $10 million in project assistance for Palestinian development programmes. The US $10 million budgetary support was remitted to PNA in March 2009. President Mahmoud Abbas laid the foundation stone of the Chancery-cum-Residences complex of the Embassy of Palestine being built in New Delhi as a gift of the Government and people of India in the presence of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. During the visit, a MoU for construction of Jawaharlal Nehru School at Abu Dees was signed and a sum of US $1.8 million is to be financed from the commitment made in May 2005.
2. President Abbas visited India for a day in February 2010. During his visit he held discussions with Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India. Shri Shashi Tharoor MoS, MEA called on President Abbas. Dr. Manmohan Singh also hosted a dinner in honour of President Abbas. During the visit Dr. Singh made a pledge of US $ 10 million as budgetary support to the PNA. This amount was promptly remitted in March 2010 to PNA budget.
3. President Abbas visited India on 11th September 2012 on his second state visit. He was accompanied by a delegation comprising senior Ministers including Dr. Saeb Erakat, PLO Executive Committee Member, and Mr. Nabil G.O. Aburudainah, President’s Advisor. The visit included inter-alia meeting with President, Delegation level talks with PM, calls by Vice President, and External Affairs Minister.
During the visit, the Embassy of the State of Palestine was inaugurated by President Abbas and Minister of External Affairs Shri S. M. Krishna, in addition to both sides signing of MOUs for cooperation in ICT, vocational training and constructing schools in Palestine. The visit also provided the opportunity to review the entire gamut of bilateral relations, the Middle East Peace Process, regional and international issues of common concern and in particular the political turmoil in West Asia.
